Aerxiati Grassland, also translated as A'erxiati Grassland (阿尔夏提草原), is located northwest of Haribuhu Town in Wenquan County, Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture. It forms the core area of the national 3A-rated Aerxiati Fairy Spring Scenic Area (阿日夏提仙泉景区). At an elevation of approximately 1,620 meters, the Mongolian name Aerxiati means “a place with a fairy spring.”

The scenic area lies within the V-shaped valley of the Aerxiati Mountains and covers approximately 125 square kilometers. Snow-capped mountains, exposed rock formations, spruce forests, and expansive grasslands unfold together across the valley, creating a landscape often described as a place where “you can see the scenery of all four seasons at a glance.”

In addition to its pristine alpine grasslands, Aerxiati is known for its natural geothermal hot springs and Silk Road-era grassland heritage, including Wusun burial mounds and ancient grassland stone figures. Located about 45 kilometers from Wenquan County, it is well suited to a western Bortala self-driving itinerary, linking other attractions around Wenquan before continuing toward Sayram Lake (赛里木湖). For travelers seeking an unspoiled grassland experience, it is one of the quieter natural retreats in western Bortala.

    Main Attractions and Highlights

    Alpine Grasslands and Nomadic Scenery

The vast meadows of Aerxiati Grassland roll gently through the mountain valley. In summer, wildflowers cover the grasslands, while traditional felt yurts are scattered among the green pastures. Cattle and sheep graze leisurely, with clearly defined snow-capped peaks rising in the distance. It is an excellent place to experience the traditional pastoral culture of the Chakhar Mongols.

The grasslands also preserve numerous Warring States-period Wusun burial mounds and Sui-Tang-era stone-enclosed ancient tombs. Large circular earthen burial mounds are scattered across the slopes, providing evidence of the ancient civilizations that once flourished on the Eurasian grasslands.

Ancient grassland stone figures also stand quietly across the landscape. These carved stone relics offer clues to the beliefs, rituals, and everyday life of ancient nomadic peoples.

Fairy Springs and Alpine Valley Scenery

The Fairy Spring (仙泉) is one of the signature attractions of the scenic area. Seven natural hot springs are distributed throughout the mountain valley. The main Fairy Spring maintains a water temperature of approximately 36–42°C year-round, and its water contains a variety of trace minerals.

The valley is also covered with groves of spruce, Populus euphratica, and willow trees, with clear streams winding through the forest. The combination of forests, flowing water, grasslands, and snow-capped mountains gives the valley a refreshing alpine atmosphere.

At the Chakhar Folk Customs Manor, visitors can experience traditional customs such as receiving a welcome drink when arriving on horseback, handmade milk tea, and Mongolian dishes including hand-held mutton. The site also introduces the history and cultural traditions associated with the westward-to-eastward migration of the Chakhar Mongols.

Colorful Lake and Grassland Archaeological Heritage

Hidden deep within the valley, Colorful Lake (七彩湖) is a quiet mountain lake whose colors change subtly with the angle of the sunlight. Surrounded by mountains and vegetation, it offers a peaceful contrast to the open grasslands.

Aerxiati does not focus on noisy commercial entertainment or large-scale amusement facilities. Its main appeal is its combination of pristine alpine grasslands, natural hot springs, and ancient grassland archaeological remains, making it particularly attractive to travelers interested in nature, photography, nomadic culture, and Silk Road history.

    Tickets and Opening Information

The scenic area charges an entrance fee. Students and visitors aged 60–64 receive a 50% discount on the entrance ticket, while seniors aged 65 and above and children under 1.3 meters tall can enter free of charge with valid identification. Hot-spring bathing, Mongolian yurt dining, and folk-culture experiences are available as additional paid activities.

During the peak season from May to October, the scenic area is generally open from 09:00 to 19:00, with last admission at 18:30. In winter, heavy snowfall may close the mountain roads and the scenic area, while sections of the valley road may be temporarily closed during heavy rain or strong winds.

Allow approximately 3–4 hours for a complete visit covering the grasslands, ancient tombs, and Fairy Spring area.

The mountains experience a large day-to-night temperature difference, so bring a warm, windproof jacket even in summer. Forested areas are subject to strict fire-control measures, and open flames are prohibited. The grassland ecosystem is fragile, so stay on designated trails and avoid trampling the pasture. Ancient tombs and stone figures are protected cultural heritage and must not be touched, climbed on, carved, or otherwise damaged. Mosquitoes and other insects can be common in the mountains, so insect repellent is recommended.

    How to Get There

Self-driving or hiring a private vehicle is the most convenient way to reach Aerxiati Grassland. From Wenquan County, the drive west takes approximately one hour, and the scenic area has a parking lot. Ordinary family cars can reach the attraction directly under normal road conditions.

There is no direct long-distance public transportation to the scenic area. Travelers without their own vehicle can hire a private car or charter a vehicle in Wenquan County.

A recommended western Bortala itinerary is:

Wenquan County → Aerxiati Grassland → Sayram Lake

Before heading into the mountains, make sure to fill your fuel tank in advance, as gas stations are relatively sparse along the mountain roads.

    Best Time to Visit

June to August is the prime season for visiting Aerxiati Grassland, when the valley is covered in green grass and wildflowers and the cool mountain climate makes it an excellent summer escape. In September, the grasslands gradually turn golden, creating a distinctly autumnal atmosphere that is particularly suitable for photography.

Early morning is ideal for walking across the grassland, when mist may linger over the valley and herds of cattle and sheep begin grazing. The soft side light before sunset is especially favorable for photographing the grasslands, ancient burial mounds, and silhouettes of the surrounding mountains.

    Travel Tips

Hiring a guide or interpreter is recommended, particularly for visitors interested in history. Without an explanation, it can be difficult to fully understand the significance of the Wusun burial mounds and grassland stone figures scattered across the landscape.

Facilities in the scenic area are relatively limited, so bring sufficient drinking water and a simple meal. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a windproof outer layer are also recommended.

If your itinerary is tight, focus on the main grassland area and Fairy Spring rather than traveling deep into the valley. These two areas provide a good introduction to Aerxiati's combination of alpine scenery, hot springs, and grassland culture.
